Nick Rodgers lives on 5 acres of farmland in rural Minnesota and is well used to seeing animals roaming around his home. Over the years, Princess, an orange wild cat who sometimes comes to visit, has become one of her favorites.
Nick told The Dodo:
“She travels between farms and everyone knows her. It’s a common thing for Princess to show up after dinner, so we feed her.”
One night earlier this month, Princess went to visit Nick and brought a rather unusual guest to dinner: a possum.
Like Princess, the opossum wandered onto the porch and started eating from the food bowl. Luckily, Princess had eaten her own food before, so she let the opossum eat as she pleased.
The princess of course always seemed to want another bite, but both parties were very polite.
This isn’t the first time the local cat and the opossums have met.

“There’s a family of opossums nearby and I’ve even seen Princess play with the youngsters in the yard. They take turns. They could have grown up together.”
Nick was surprised the first time he saw Princess with the opossums, but soon realized that they had learned to live together in peace.
“When I started looking at them they were going nose to nose for a while and then Princess was running and the opossum was trying to follow. to fight, so I just sat back and enjoyed the show.”
Seeing how kind the possums are to the princess, Nick hopes he can help break the species’ bad reputation and encourages people not to scare them away if they are seen hiding in the woods.
“Possums are very misunderstood. They’re not aggressive, just curious. Plus, they eat so many ticks and bugs. I feel like they’re as much my friends as Princess.”
