Runt is a lovely tabby kitten who has lived much of his life on the streets, and thanks to the Lake County Florida Animal Shelter in Tavares, Florida, he was finally able to find the family of his dreams, since then the happy feline showed his thanks in the cutest way.
When the tabby came into the shelter he was malnourished and in poor physical condition, shy and withdrawn from his experience of life on the streets for so long.
Shelter staff member Emily Blythe told Love Meow:
He was underweighted, had open wounds and a severe upper respiratory infection.
Cat who has spent most of his life on the streets helps other kittens
After spending time under the supervision of a veterinarian and receiving proper treatment for her injuries, Runt went to her foster home with Emily to begin her emotional recovery process.
The volunteer remembers:
He fit in perfectly with my flock of older cats. He seemed to bloom overnight.
When Runt was released from his physical injuries and felt safe in Emily’s home, the tabby let his sweet personality shine through, he was happy to have a family, a warm bed and the food. After a few weeks of caring for the kitten, Emily realized that Runt had finally found her forever by his side.
Emily says:
It’s IVF+, but that hasn’t stopped him. The vet estimates he’s around 14. He’s the calmest cat.
A few days after her adoption became official, Emily brought home a little kitten that needed special care, and the older cat immediately took the little one under her wing. Since then, Emily says Runt has become the adoptive parent of every kitten that comes home to seek shelter.
The woman remembers:
I brought home a little kitten under a pound. I didn’t expect him to make it, but Runt took it upon himself to take care of him and clean him up, almost like a mother, and he got away with it.
After a while, a kitten named Dolly was taken into Emily’s foster home. There the volunteer decided to place her next to another rescued one named Reece, at first the tuxedoed feline seemed very withdrawn and not socializing, but that all changed when she met Runt.
Almost immediately Runt took little Dolly under his wing, began to give her a lick bath and the little feline seemed to feel safe, immediately calmed down and rolled onto her back looking for cuddles.
Emily says:
Now she runs to him for affection. He has become a surrogate father for the foster kittens who have passed through our home.
Runt also cared for Morgan, a three-legged kitten, who needed 24-hour attention, the cat cared for the kitten, played with her and gave her long baths every day, taught him to behave like a good kitten and was very tolerant of his antics.
Emily remembers:
Morgan has grown into a feisty little kitten. He loves picking on Runt and the other cats in the house, even if they don’t want to.
Despite the difficult experience of his past on the streets, Runt has become the sweetest and most charming cat of all. The older cat continues to show affection to everyone around him, especially the neediest kittens. It is as if he is offering them the same love he received when he was saved long ago.
