Dog escapes from pet hotel and returns home while family was on vacation

While a Kansas family was enjoying their vacation, they got a big surprise when their security camera alert told them their dog was at the front door waiting to come inside. The family assumed Dexter was at the doggie daycare, but he escaped and managed to run home.

Jeremy and Sarah Henson, the mischievous boy’s adoptive parents, were miles away enjoying a few days of vacation in Las Vegas. When they received the notification on their phone that someone was at their door, they couldn’t believe their eyes.

Jeremy told Inside Edition:

“We were both like, ‘Oh my God, it’s Dexter! » »

The couple had planned for Dexter to stay at daycare for five days, but apparently on the third day, the restless dog was so homesick that he snuck out to see his family. Jeremy says Dexter had to jump a 6-foot fence to make his escape and run 2 miles home.

Seeing the dog excited, his parents tried to calm him down by speaking to him over the loudspeaker. They then called the dog hotel, who immediately went to pick up the 4-legged escape artist. Amid all this initial commotion, the couple wasn’t at all surprised by Dexter’s escape on the way home.

Jeremy added:

“Obviously he didn’t realize we were gone, he just thought we were at home. And he took his protection work very seriously. »

In an interview with Fox 4 Kansas City, Dexter’s mother said her husband once took the dog for long walks, which may be how he learned to return home. The woman wondered why the pet hotel hadn’t informed them of what was happening.

Sara added:

“I wasn’t surprised it was on our front porch. “I was afraid they wouldn’t know, so I called them.”

Dexter’s journey to find his home was surprising, but it is possible since dogs have an incredible sense of smell. According to VCA Hospitals, dogs have more than 100 million sensory receptors in their nasal cavity, compared to only 6 million in humans.

VCA Hospitals says:

“A dog’s sense of smell is so keen that a blind dog has much less difficulty adjusting to vision loss than a human.”

The journey Dexter took to return home to his family is an example of what a dog’s loyalty and incredible sense of smell can accomplish when working together.
