Rebecca Lynch and her husband had a great vacation in Savannah, Georgia, where they had an unexpected stop before heading home. Most people stocked up on souvenirs, but Rebecca decided to bring something more meaningful with her.
Rebecca discovered Lizzy, a young terrier at risk of euthanasia, through a friend who lived in the area. According to Rebecca, someone had abandoned a pregnant Lizzy at a shelter, and of course she wasn’t going to let the adorable dog and her children meet a tragic end.
When Rebecca learned of the large number of shelters in Georgia that euthanize dogs, she knew she had to rescue the dog most in need before returning home. She had room in her car and, of course, was eager to help.
Pregnant dog gave birth in car after rescue
Lizzy, who in addition to being pregnant had heartworm disease and a broken leg; she couldn’t suffer anymore, and Rebecca was well aware of that.
The couple made the hours-long trip to Florida comfortable for the dog by putting a bed and blanket in the backseat. Rebecca also sat next to Lizzy, gently stroking her as her husband drove, ensuring her safety and comfort during the long drive.
But it seems the couple eventually gained the dog’s trust so much that while they were driving home, something unexpected happened.
Rebecca told The Dodo:
“About an hour later, she finally relaxed and rubbed her little head against my hand as I stroked her. Once she felt safe and comfortable, she decided that it was about time. She started to gasp and became restless; I said to my husband: I think she is in labor!”
Already feeling safe in the family car, it took Lizzy just 20 minutes to give birth to her first puppy. Rebecca played the midwife, helping to keep the new mum calm and making sure all the babies were safe.
And by the time they got to the vet, the family had grown, with Lizzy giving birth to not just one pup during the trip, but three!
Fortunately, after veterinary care, where she gave birth to another pup, they confirmed that everything was fine with the mother and her babies, so they went home.
But the incredible adventure to freedom they had embarked on just hours before was not going to stop there. By the time the family returned home, the number of dogs Lizzy had had had increased by two more, for a total of six strong and healthy puppies.
The family’s trip was full of surprises, but it only meant a fresh start for the dog. Lizzy and her six puppies will spend a few more days at the vet before meeting Rebecca, and they will begin their fostering period to find responsible homes for each of them.
Rebecca added:
“Lizzy is a doll. Bless her heart, with everything she’s been through in her short life, she’s so loving and trusting. She’s a kind and loving soul.”
Sadly, months after her rescue, Lizzy had to undergo surgery to amputate her leg, which was so damaged she couldn’t be saved. But Lizzy has shown her strength and her desire to face the obstacles that come her way. Now she is happy with Rebecca and her family, who have decided to stay with her and give her the house of her dreams.
Thanks to this family, Lizzy will be very happy and will be able to enjoy the love and understanding that every dog deserves.
