Louie is a 12-year-old sheepdog who lives with Marolyn Diver’s parents in New Zealand. For Louie’s family, there has never been any doubt that he is a good boy. But even they were shocked to learn what their hero dog did.
Ever since Marolyn has known him, the friendly dog โโhas always wanted to go on little adventures through the farmland that surrounds his family’s property, but that has waned with age. Now Louie, 12, his movements are slower and his senses have shut down, so he seems to prefer to stay close to home.
So, when the old dog went missing one day recently while Marolyn was visiting town, it caused some concern.
A family thought they lost their dog until he returned with a note around his neck
Marolyn told The Dodo:
“My mother was a bit grumpy because she thought she had stopped wandering. We were afraid he would forget where his house was.”
What the family didn’t know at the time was that Louie was saving a life.
After an entire afternoon passed with no sign of Louie, his family was initially relieved to see him wandering home, but then they noticed he had a note around his neck. Marolyn’s first reaction was alarming. Was it a warning? Did Louie cause trouble or did he cross paths with the wrong person?
She said:
“He looked so exhausted and collapsed. We were worried someone had hurt him. But after reading the note, I felt complete relief and then my heart melted.”
That’s when they found out what their dog had done. The note said:
“Louie is the hero of the day. He led me to Maddy in distress, stuck under a pile of branches. Well done, Rob.”
Rob is a farmer who lives a mile away and Maddy is his dog. Marolyn and her parents called him to find out more about what had happened.
Turns out Rob wasn’t able to find Maddy earlier in the day when he was on his way to run errands in town. When he got home, however, Louie was there, looking very insistent that Rob follow him. Eventually Rob agreed, and of course Louie led him straight to a pile of wood where Maddy had been trapped.
Louie is a hero dog
Marolin said:
“Rob said he was 100% sure Louie knew what he was doing, and getting Rob to Maddy was his only goal. Once he found him, Louie helped Rob pull him out, pulling on the branches, digging into the ground. Rob said the second he was free; the two dogs ran to a nearby pond and jumped in there exhausted and drank some water. He then gave Louie a large handful of dog biscuits as a thank you. He knew Louie might get in trouble if he came home late, so he thought he’d write a note to explain his absence.”
Thanks to Louie, Maddy was safe and sound.
Unfortunately, all the energy Louie had spent making sure Maddy was saved had apparently taken its toll on him. Although Louie managed to return home afterwards, he was now in poor condition.
Marolin said:
“That night we were very worried about Louie. He could barely walk and he looked horrible. We were afraid he wouldn’t make it through the night.”
But then Louie had a visitor who lifted his spirits.
Marolin says:
“The next morning Rob arrived on his bike with Maddy in a small basket in the back. Louie perked up and was back to normal.”
Marolyn and her parents have always adored Louie, whom they rescued from an animal shelter when he was just a dog, and more than a decade later their love for him continues to grow. This recent act of heroism is just one more reason.
Marolin added:
“It changed the way I see things. And I think my parents feel the same way. I’m so proud of him.”
