Spencer and Rocky have been inseparable friends for 10 long and happy years. They liked to be close to each other all the time. But unfortunately, something unexpected happened that would leave Spencer without her beloved brother.

Beth Fisher, the dog’s owner, told The Dodo:

“They had never spent a night apart. Rocky and Spencer slept in the same bed, ate from the same bowl and always walked together when they went out.”

This happy time together recently came to an end.

Rocky fell seriously ill and was taken to the vet to be tested for the disease the dog had developed, and it was discovered that a large cancerous tumor was growing inside him.

The tragic discovery, which had been too late for treatment, left only one option to end the poor dog’s suffering.

That same day, Rocky had to be euthanized.

Beth said:

“Rocky’s sudden death was difficult to deal with, but we can’t imagine how hard it must be for Spencer to have lost his baby brother.”

Spencer was heartbroken, and it showed.

Since his brother died, the dog gets up at night to roam the house looking for Rocky, then starts crying because he can’t find him, Beth says.

But this gift the family gave the heartbroken dog calmed him down.

A pillow honoring Rocky’s memory seems to have helped fill the void his passing left in Spencer’s heart.

Beth said:

“Spencer has been snuggling up against the pillow since when we brought him back, carrying her from the couch to his own bed. He seems a lot calmer now that he has something to snuggle up to.”

Now Spencer no longer sleeps alone. He has the pillow to give him some comfort.

We know nothing can bring Rocky back. But for Spencer, who is becoming a senior dog, it’s reassuring to know that her best friend is always with her in mind.

Beth knows Spencer won’t get over Rocky leaving, but she hopes she can learn to move on without him. She said the way forward is one she will never have to face alone.

Beth said:

“We hope Spencer can feel comfortable with his new pillow and feel comfortable with all the care he receives from his family.”
