Sam, the lost labrador and husky mix, traveled 823 miles for almost 5 years before finding his way home. He got lost in Georgia and somehow ended up in Ohio! When his father found out that the cub had been found, he couldn’t believe it. Now Sam is happy to be home, but he probably wishes he could share his amazing story.
The adventure of life
Michael Joy lost Sam in the summer of 2016 while living in Fort Benning, Georgia. Joy and his family later moved to Tennessee. Until then, they assumed they would never see Sam again.
Joy had two other dogs when Sam disappeared. One was Sam’s best friend, and when he died, Joy started thinking about Sam again. To honor their missing puppy, the family brought home a new dog and named him Sam. Little did they know that this name choice would get confusing.
When Joy got a call from City Dogs Cleveland, Ohio, not long after, he was incredibly confused. He hadn’t been to Ohio recently, but somehow Sam had traveled 823 miles to get there.
Joy said:
The first time I got a call, I said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve never been to Ohio. Are you sure he’s, my dog? You can describe it? “And she said she had light brown hair and I said,” Wait a second. You can’t talk about Sam himself.
Sam is finally home!
City Dogs Cleveland met Sam after police found him on the street. They gave him a medical exam, vaccinated him, and then checked his microchip. Indeed, he had a family. After hearing about Joy’s situation, the shelter even offered to extend the dogs’ typical wait time. But it was not necessary. Joy and his family got in the car the next morning and drove 8 hours to find Sam.
The shelter recorded the moment when Sam was reunited with his family. At first, he didn’t seem to recognize her. But when he smelled Joy and heard her voice, he perked up. And of course, the family was too excited too.
The second time I saw it it was a wave of emotion,” Joy said. “My wife and daughter cried. I don’t show very good emotions. I was a paramedic for 20 years and I saw a lot. But when I saw it, it was almost tearing me apart. I was so happy to see it.
It didn’t take long for Sam to get used to his father’s new home. The family said it’s almost like Sam never left. Although the family now has two dogs with the same name, this is a confusing situation for them to find out. But it’s a wonder the original Sam is home, so they plan to pamper him for the rest of his life. If only we knew where he has been all these years!

If only dogs could talk to us. Then we could find out what they were thinking or what their past was like. Above all, stray dogs could tell us all about their adventures.
