When Flora’s family adopted a 20-year-old cat named Dexter, the beautiful Alaskan Malamute fell in love with him, and the pair became best friends with her. The family adopted Dexter from the Best Friends Animal Society knowing that he didn’t have much time left, but when he passed away two years later, it was incredibly difficult for everyone, especially Flora. Until 4 kittens appeared in her life.
Jill Williams, Flora’s mother and director of the Best Friends Animal Society, told The Dodo:
“Flora was very worried and sad. She spun and moaned. She spent a lot of time outside and she didn’t want to go inside. She howled, which she rarely does, and she broke our hearts.”

In an attempt to help alleviate Flora’s pain, the family adopted two young cats, but they did not like cuddling with Flora the way Dexter did. Poor Flora still seemed to feel something was missing, until her family decided to give some kittens a temporary home.
Originally, Jill decided to foster kittens, named Iggy, Bowie, Roxy, and Glamor, because she wanted to teach her children the importance of nurturing. She had no idea that Flora would benefit the most.
As soon as the kittens arrived at the family home, Flora began to perk up. After a few days, Flora and the kittens finally got together, and it was everything Flora had been wanting and needing since her beloved Dexter had passed away.
Jill said:
“The four of them immediately approached her, unfazed by her larger appearance of hers. Iggy was the first brave boy; he came over and sniffed. She gently brought his face close to meet his.”
“She got a huge smile on her face and then the other three came trotting over to say hello.”
Now Flora spends as much time with them as possible, playing games, taking care of them and always making sure they are very happy.
Jill said:
“We have let Flora explore the kittens every day. She gets so happy when they get close to her. Bowie recently started grooming Flora. She just closes her eyes and starts to smile. When Flora enters the kitten’s room, they surround her.”

“She sniffs each one and licks them, and finally she jumps on the bed or turns around to find the best place on the floor, wherever there are more kittens.”
The kittens appear to have given Flora a new life contract, and in turn, Flora is helping to socialize the kittens and prepare them for their eventual forever homes.
Flora will probably be sad when her new kitty friends eventually have to leave, but she now knows that she can have friends as great as Dexter.
