Neville was rescued from the streets and since then has been sleeping with his new bowl of food every night in his forever home.
A few years ago, Susanne stumbled upon a photo of a little Jack Russell terrier mix on the internet that broke her heart. Although Susanne already had a rescue dog at home, she began to imagine what it would be like to help another dog in need.
She said to The Dodo:
He was 10 years old and I knew instantly that I loved him! I stood in line for three hours outside the rescue center to make sure I was the first to show interest, and we joined in as we looked at each other.

Neville was found wandering the streets; his past was a mystery. But the woman was clear that the little dog had had a difficult life. Although Neville was very happy to be in a new home, the transition was not easy, especially when it was time to eat.

Susanne said:
We think they used him for breeding and clearly mistreated him. At first he would fight over food and try to feed himself directly from the ground or from my other dog’s plate.

Susanne added:
I had to train him to eat from a bowl, and once he figured it out, he treasured that bowl.

Now Neville’s most precious possession is his plate of food, which he takes with him everywhere. She even takes him to his bed and sleeps with him every night.

Susanne said:
I think he’s never had one of his own and now he realizes that he finally has one and that he is guaranteed a reliable source of decent and nutritious food. He seems so grateful for a simple bowl. I think it represents comfort and home for him.

Neville also adores his adopted brother, they are very close and it seems they have been together their entire lives.

Ever since being by her side, Neville has been a constant source of love for Susanne, and she hopes her story can inspire others to adopt an older dog.

She added:
It is a gentle, calm and shy soul who follows me everywhere. Now he’s 12, he’s pretty deaf and can’t see very well, but he loves life!
