Types of Golden Retrievers
American Goldens are bright gold and this is prescribed by the AKC (American Standard, hereinafter AC) standard – “…a rich, bright gold of varying shades”. And further: …very dark and very light colours are undesirable. Some tolerance should be shown for light-coloured puppies that show signs that their colour will deepen as they mature.”
The American Standard is more detailed and specifically states that overall harmony, balance of appearance and the way the dog moves are most important. In addition, the American Standard expressly states that as a primarily hunting dog, the Golden must be presented in good working condition.
There is a widespread misconception that all European Golden Retrievers are cream-colored. But this is not true. This type of Golden Retriever has a lighter coloring. Even the slightly golden color of the English Golden Retriever is brighter than that of other types. VKS (British Standard, hereinafter BS) allows all shades of gold or cream, but not red or mahogany.”
There are also external differences. The British Golden Retriever has a broader skull and a more square and voluminous muzzle. The eyes are dark, rounder and larger than those of the American type. These dogs have a heavier bone structure and are more muscular and voluminous. According to the BS standard, the ears are located approximately at eye level.
There is another type of golden retriever, the Canadian. The Canadian Retriever resembles the American Retriever in appearance, but is lighter in color. The color is described as a cross between the British and American type golden retrievers. Their coat tends to be finer and shorter, unlike the American Golden Retrievers. It is dense, but not coarse or silky, straight, longer on the neck, hips and tail. In addition, they are about 5 cm taller.
Differences with the Labrador Retriever
Sometimes these two breeds create some confusion due to the similarity they have at different levels. However, they are two very different breeds both physically and behaviorally. The fact that they are both Retriever means that they share certain characteristics, but that does not mean that they are of the same breed. For starters, among the physical features of the Golden Retriever, the fact that it has a long coat, which never happens in the Labrador Retriever.
In addition, the colors of the two are very different, only the cream-colored specimens of the two breeds being similar. On the other hand, the Golden Retriever has a friendly temper with everyone, which also tends to appear in Labrador, but this second can be more shy if it is not socialized correctly as a puppy. What is clear is that both breeds are more than recommended as a pet, so if you choose one, you just need to make sure you get as much information as possible. And in a case of the Golden Retriever, you will find here the most complete information.

What to expect when taking care of a Golden Retriever
Taking care of a dog involves daily exercise, regular diet, grooming and veterinary care. Expect camaraderie, loyalty and joy, as well as responsibilities such as training, cleaning after them and the supply of a safe environment.
The Golden Retriever is a generally healthy dog. However, they are prone to certain diseases, including:
- Hip dysplasia;
- Elbow dysplasia;
- Cataract;
- Progressive retinal atrophy;
- Subvalvular aortic stenosis;
- Osteochondrosis;
- Allergy;
- von Willebrand’s disease – an inherited blood disorder;
- Dilatation of the stomach – Volvulus, commonly known as bloating or volvulus;
- Epilepsy;
- Hypothyroidism;
- Hemangiosarcoma is a very dangerous form of cancer, most commonly found in middle and older Retrievers;
- Osteosarcoma.
The Golden Retriever is a breed which has a fairly abundant coat and which loses twice a year. They must be combed at least twice a week, and preferably 3, and bathed at least 1 time a month. The ears are cleaned 3 times a week, the eyes are cleaned daily. The claws are cut 3 times a month.
Like most sporting breeds, the Golden Retriever needs exercise such as walking, running, and playing throughout the day. A Golden Retriever that does not get enough exercise may exhibit undesirable behavior.
The Golden breed makes a great companion for their owner on walks, jogs, and bike rides. They are observed to enjoy running on the grass and playing enthusiastically by catching thrown objects. The pace of the activities to be performed is important for the health of your dog’s bones and joints.
To meet the Golden Retriever’s daily exercise needs, simply allow your dog time for 45-60 minute activities or 2-2.5 kilometer walks.
The Golden Retriever is perfect for keeping both in a private house and in a not too cramped apartment. The most important thing is to give the dog enough attention and not leave it alone for a long time. Therefore, this breed is not suitable for people who spend all their time at work, and this should be taken into account when choosing a puppy.
Character and behavior
It would not be wrong to describe golden retriever dogs with the words intelligent, well-mannered, affectionate, easy to train and reliable. Goldens are perfect family dogs. They can easily communicate with family members and their friendly and protective attitude towards children and babies makes them perhaps the most favorite family dog in the world.
In addition to these good habits, one must also mention their bad character structures, which entirely depend on the attitude of their owners; when left alone and without love, they start misbehaving. Being a lively and active dog breed, they need constant activity, otherwise you may encounter a situation contrary to your expectations. Due to their extremely hot nature, they have almost no potential to become guard dogs. They are good at hunting and can easily work in swamps, wetlands and on land.

History of the breed
Lord Tweedmouth decided to continue breeding dogs with unusual coat colors and bred his retriever to a Tea Tweed Water Spaniel. The mating was successful and soon three puppies of a rare yellow color were born. Encouraged by his success, Tweedmouth continued his breeding experiments, selecting for further mating only suitable individuals with a pure golden color.
When Tweedmouth died, his work was continued by his friends, to whom the lord gave puppies. Two of them have even opened their own golden retriever kennels. To improve the characteristics of the breed, retrievers were crossed with Labradors, bloodhounds and Irish setters. In 1885, Golden Retrievers were considered the kings of sport hunting dogs.
The golden retriever breed was officially recognized in 1913. Goldens are now among the four most popular dog breeds in the world.
