With the appearance of a stuffed animal and an equally sweet character, the labradoodle is the result of the combination of a standard poodle and a labrador retriever. This mixture achieves impressive results, as these mongrels are dogs with a multitude of benefits. They are attentive, affectionate, collaborative and very playful.

The Labradoodle inherited from her parents (Labrador and Poodle) the most valuable qualities. The poodle got a beautiful hypoallergenic coat, and the Labrador Retriever got the perfect character.

Initially, the main purpose of Labradoodle was to serve as a guide dog. Later, the scope of the use of excellent qualities of representatives of the breed expanded. Now it is a therapeutic dog, a rescue search and dog, a companion for the elderly and just a pet, characterized by endless devotion and friendliness.

Labradoodle development and evolution has been going on for quite some time.

Over the years, breeders still fail to consolidate certain characteristics and establish a single standard for this hybrid dog.

Some representatives of the species are very similar to a poodle, while others inherit almost all the features of a Labrador Retriever. The ideal result is 50 to 50.

At the moment, Labradoodle is divided into two subspecies with regards to the breed type:

1. Australian Labradoodle – 50% Poodle, 50% Labrador Retriever. Outwardly, it is very similar to a Labrador, but the coat is from a poodle, the coat looks stiff, but it feels nice and soft. It differs in large size.
2. American Labradoodle – 75% poodle, 25% Labrador. Outwardly very similar to a poodle, but the character of the Labrador. The physique is more elegant, inferior in size to the Australian one. The purpose is not official, but decorative.

It is also worth noting that the representatives of the breed are divided into three different types, with regard to size:

1. Miniature – height 30-44 cm., Weight 7-13 kg.
2. Medium – height 44-54 cm, weight 14-20 kg.
3. Standard – height 55-63 cm., Weight 21-30 kg.

• Head: The head is round and in proportion to the body. The skull is wide, the muzzle is rectangular. Medium length collar.
• Jaws: Strong teeth with a scissor bite.
• Ears: Hanging ears, located on the same line as the eyes.
• Eyes: The eyes are large, set apart, round or almond-shaped. The color of the iris is dark.
• Frame: The body is athletic, straight. The chest is voluminous with rounded ribs.
• Limbs: Legs of medium length, muscular.
• Coat: The coat is of medium length, but its texture can be different: corded, wavy, soft, curly and tightly twisted. Cream, chocolate, wheaten, black, red, brown, white, silver, brindle.

The Labradoodle is quite an energetic and active dog; prolonged rest is totally unusual for him. Always happy to jump in and play with the household.

They feel the strongest attachment to the owner, they try to be as close to him as possible. It is for this reason that they strive to climb into the master’s bed to sleep.

Curious, flexible, very sensitive, always ready to help a person. They are easy and understandable in learning, quickly grasp commands and other education wisdom. High mental abilities are defined at the genetic level, since the poodle ranks third among the most intelligent breeds.

Despite a strong body, the Labradoodle is prone to some diseases:

• Epilepsy – characterized by convulsions, involuntary bowel movements. Attacks can be controlled, but the disease itself is not treated.
• Joint dysplasia – accompanied by severe pain, leads to lameness and partial immobility.
• Progressive retinal atrophy – reduced vision, blindness may occur without proper treatment.
• Hypothyroidism is an endocrine pathology that develops as a result of insufficient synthesis or impaired utilization of thyroid hormones.
• Allergy – more commonly observed food.
• Von Willebrand disease – develops in the presence of a defective von Willebrand factor in the blood or its deficiency in the blood.
• Otitis is a skin pathology that is treated with medication.
• Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine failure in the pancreas, in which the body does not produce enough insulin.

Labradoodle care is not difficult:

• Wavy hair is combed 1-2 times a week.
• The curly coat is brushed daily.
• During the moulting period, the coat is combed every day, regardless of its type.
• Grooming is done once every 1-2 months.
• Ears are examined once a week, dirt is removed.
• The eyes are cleaned 1-2 times each week.
• Brush teeth 2-3 times a week.
• Bath as needed or once a month.

• The term “Labradoodle” first appeared in 1955.
• Barack Obama could not decide what dog to choose. He liked two breeds: Labradoodle and Portuguese Water Dog. The choice fell on the second option, but the popularity of Labradoodles has since jumped.
• The Labradoodle is considered to be one of the most intellectually developed breeds, as its direct ancestor, the poodle, is one of the three most intelligent dogs in the world.
• The first mention in the press of a Labradoodle dog was noted by D. Campbell in his book, Into the Water Barrier.

• The Labradoodle is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary.
• The world-famous game “Monopoly” in the version of “Here and Now” has replaced the icon of the Scottish Terrier with a Labradoodle.

The first recognized labradoodle specimen was recorded in 1955. However, it was not until 1988 that Australian breeder Wally Conron introduced this hybrid breed to the world in his association called “Victoria Dog Guide”, to be guide dogs for the blind. Thus, the objective of this crossing was none other than to obtain a hypoallergenic, affectionate, loyal dog endowed with great learning capacities. From then on, this mix between Labrador Retriever and Poodle began to be known and admired around the world.

Currently, there is no unified breed standard; One of the main reasons is the lack of consensus on the crossings to be made. Many breeders advocate only first-generation crosses, that is to say only between Labrador retrievers and poodles, while others cross labradoodles between them. This made them start to differentiate themselves, being the second known as the Australian or multigenerational labradoodle.

Over the years, many breeders have attempted to develop the breed incorrectly, regardless of parent genetics, inherited diseases or family ties. This caused a huge labradoodle crisis, as many puppies had congenital diseases or nervousness problems due to incorrect crossbreeding. However, other breeders, like Mellodie Woodlye, had all these criteria in mind and decided to develop the breed in a more respectful way, by baptizing it with another name to escape the fame that the bad practices of others had granted to the farmer. This new name was the Australian cobberdog.

Gradually, the breed has been consolidated and, currently, the Australian cobberdog is a breed officially recognized by the Australian MDBA Association.
