It’s no secret that dog breeds differ in character, physical and mental abilities. Have you ever wondered which race is the most learned of them all? Finnish scientists have found the answer.
Which dog is the smartest
According to Telegraph, a study in which more than 1,000 dogs participated, the Malinois is the smartest dog in the world. Among all other breeds, the Belgian dog breed took the first place.
Scientists from the University of Helsinki presented 1,002 dogs from 13 different breeds with a range of problems focusing on cognitive traits and behavior. The Malinois has shown excellent results in almost all tests.
The scientists tested the dogs in ten tasks, the results of which were evaluated by the authors of special smartDOG tests. The experts analyzed the animals’ behavior, impulsivity, social cognition, spatial problem solving, logical thinking and short-term memory.
“Two breeds stand out cognitively: the Malinois and the Border Collie. Both were first active on farms managing herds. only to reinforce this self-control”, explains veterinarian Bart Stegen.
According to the results of the study, the Belgian Shepherd Malinois became the leader. He scored 35 of 39 points. Second place was taken by the Border Collie breed (26 points) and the Hovawart came third (25 points).
It is no coincidence that the Malinois is used all over the world as a police dog. Their cognitive qualities facilitate learning. In addition, they have a well-developed sense of smell, better than that of the Border Collie.
The popular Labrador and the Golden Retriever scored slightly lower. Even if they succeeded in one area: the interpretation of human gestures.
Stegen explained that they’re socially adjusted, and because they’re a little less intelligent, they’re less likely to explore all sorts of things. This generally makes them a good family dog.
