Some smells are hard to get used to, and cat urine is one of them. Be careful with certain cleaning products, they can make the situation even worse. Poorly cleaned cat urine can pose a threat to your health, so it’s worth learning how to eliminate it. What to do to get rid of cat urine smell? When other methods fail, this simple trick can come in handy.

Why is cat urine smell so hard to get rid of?

The stench of cat urine can be a nightmare for pet owners, especially when someone comes to visit. After a while, cat owners’ olfactory receptors become less sensitive to this unpleasant odor, but it still lingers in the air. This is why it is so important to skillfully remove urine that accidentally comes out of the litter box and regularly clean up after your pet.

If such practices make it possible to control the intensity of odors, they are not always sufficient. In an apartment with a cat, it is difficult to get rid of this characteristic smell. What exactly gives your cat’s urine that smell? The pungent odor is associated with the presence of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. The first of these compounds has a characteristic smell of rotten eggs, and the second is responsible for the overpowering smell of hair dyes. Additionally, the urine of unneutered cats also contains feline, a non-protein sulfur-containing amino acid. Compounds containing this element are known for their characteristic and unpleasant odors.

The problem with getting rid of the cat urine smell is that regular cleaning products don’t work. Substances containing ammonia and chlorine can intensify the odor of this animal’s urine. That is why there are special products on the market designed to eliminate urine and not just mask its smell. They often also contain pheromone blockers, which prevent cats from urinating where they have previously urinated. Such measures have their uses, but they often cost a fortune.

When cleaning up cat urine, the most important thing is to dry the area where he pees. It’s best to do this with a dry, absorbent towel – paper ones will do. Remember not to pour lukewarm water on the stains or heat them in any way. Trying to help yourself with a hair dryer can make the situation worse. The stench will be unbearable.

What gets rid of cat urine smell?

Fans of natural methods will be delighted – the best way to get rid of the smell of cat urine is the means that most people have available in the kitchen. There are several possible methods, but they all focus on popular substances available in homes.

1. Vinegar

It is one of the substances that dominates among household cleaning methods. It is also ideal for eliminating the smell of your cat’s urine. Simply mix it with water in a 3:1 ratio. This will not only neutralize the unpleasant odor, but also disinfect the surface.

2. Corn flour

Sprinkle a small amount on a damp surface and wait for it to absorb the scent. Then vacuum and the cat urine smell should be neutralized.

3. Hydrogen peroxide

You can dilute it a little more. This is a good remedy for cat urine that is worth having on hand. Unlike other methods, you do not have to get rid of it (suck it up with a vacuum cleaner, wait until the unpleasant smell disappears). The downside is that, as the name suggests, it is an oxidant that acts like a mild bleach. It may be better not to experiment if you want to clean your favorite carpet.

4. Baking soda

This inexpensive ingredient, found in almost every kitchen, should be used in the same way as corn flour. Simply sprinkle it on the surface that your cat has chosen to mark and leave it for a few hours. You can also use it by mixing it with water to create a paste. In this form it will be good for removing odors from light fabrics.
