A dog’s life can be so different for many of our four-legged friends. Fortunately, many of them find permanent, loving homes early on and become part of the family for many years.
But not all dogs are so lucky.
Melanie Andrews was aware of this when she visited a local kennel. Mélanie, mother and grandmother, has a lot of love in life and she wanted to share it with a four-legged friend or a friend who doesn’t feel this happiness.
Kennel staff said Melanie came to the kennel with just one question.
“The nice lady came into the kennel and asked who was the oldest dog that was the hardest to find a home for?” they wrote on their Facebook page.
The 73-year-old grandmother lost her husband and her American Staffordshire dog, Lola, who was a great comfort to her.
She felt alone.
“I felt depressed and sad,” Melanie said. “My grandchildren came one day and said, ‘Grandma, you need someone to keep you company. You can’t stay here alone all day.'”
The answer was Jake.
Just like Melanie, Jake was alone for a long time. When Melanie asked who the oldest dog was, she was introduced to Jake.
The 12-year-old terrier suffered from cancer and skin problems. People regularly ignored him when they came to the kennel to adopt him. Mélanie immediately said yes.
“Mélanie came to the kennel not only to find a wonderful dog, but also to save a life and give unconditional love to a dog in need,” they wrote on their Facebook page.
Lots of love
Melanie was informed of the high vet costs, but said she would “give him the best time possible.”
She just wanted to take care of a dog in need and give him lots of love.
Jake immediately felt comfortable in his new home.
“Every day I laugh a little more,” Mélanie said. “I’m not alone anymore. I think Jake knows I love him because he walks up to me, rubs his leg and asks me to rub his belly. Then he puts his nose next to mine. And a dog who doesn’t know that someone loves him wouldn’t do these things.” .
We are so happy they found each other. It’s a wonderful testament to the change a dog can bring to a person.
