Stray dogs have to go through many situations that can cause them to struggle between life and death. And it is that surviving the difficult life on public roads is almost a challenge, especially if they have to manage to get food and water.

This is how it happened to Sonny, a puppy who was rescued from the streets in a terrible state: he was malnourished, with a stomach disease and without fur.

According to information from The Dodo, the pup was picked up by volunteers from the Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS) in the United States, after receiving a few calls from neighbors who had seen him wandering around.

When the pet store workers saw him, they realized he looked devastated and his gaze was lost. At first, he didn’t have much confidence with humans, but he quickly gave in.

“He looked like he was about to give up. He looked broken in his eyes,” house manager Lydia Sattler told The Dodo.

In addition to the physical complications he had, it was noted that his mind was severely damaged. Despite this, when he was sent home, he immediately showed his gratitude to those who got him out of this complex situation.

“You could literally see the life coming back to his eyes as we cared for him… Sonny just wanted to hug everyone. He melted for everyone,” Lydia added.

The pup hugged every volunteer in the place, no matter who it was. “With daily care and someone who loves him, he’s improved a lot. It’s like he’s grateful for that. I don’t know how to explain it, you can just feel it,” said director.

Sonny has slowly improved, but is not yet ready for permanent adoption. “It looks awful, but it will get better. His fur will grow back, he will gain weight (…) A perfect person for Sonny would be someone with a caring spirit. It’s what he deserves,” he concluded.
