Although still highly appreciated, kindness is an increasingly rare virtue. A video that went viral on social media is perhaps the best example.
In the footage, a homeless man is seen happily celebrating the birthday of two dogs who live with him and keep him company every day.
Posted to Twitter by a user named Blanco, the video shows the man sitting on a ladder with two dogs. Her four-legged friends are seen wearing adorable party hats.

The man then takes a cake and places two candles on it. He lights the candles and sings happy birthday to the puppies, then kisses them and cuts each of them a slice of cake. “There are still people who make us proud,” says a message posted on Twitter.
The video sparked a wave of appreciation on social media, with many people emphasizing that love knows no bounds. “You don’t have to have a lot of money to do special things…you just have to have a heart. And this man has a heart of gold. Even with his limited resources, he does special things to his four-legged friends. Love and kindness know no boundaries,” one user wrote on Twitter.
Many who viewed the footage wondered whether it might be better if abandoned animals were taken from the homeless people who care for them. One user commented: “There are people who go out of their way to steal pets from homeless people, claiming they ‘just want to help the animal.’ Animals, especially pets, are just as important to the homeless. They are proof of unconditional love and friendship.”
Another user agreed, saying: “I can’t help but wonder if homeless pets are happier than their ‘domesticated’ counterparts.” As long as their food and water needs are met, they simply stay with the pack all day, running or resting. Much closer to their evolutionary roots than in a building.
Another homeless man made headlines in 2020 for his uplifting gesture towards some helpless animals.
The W-Underdogs shelter in Atlanta, Georgia caught fire on December 18. Keith Walker, a 53-year-old homeless man, ignored the flames and choking smoke, saving the poor animals trapped inside. Despite the danger he faced, he overcame the situation and got all the dogs and cats out of the shelter.
Walker was described as her “guardian angel” by W-Underdogs owner Gracie Hamlin, who added that she would be forever grateful to the man for his heroic act.
Although the fire did not completely destroy the animal shelter, it made it uninhabitable. Luckily, the shelter was only a week away from the move.
“I was really scared, I’m not going to lie to you,” Walker, who has his own pet Pitbull, said in an interview.
“I was afraid to go there with all that smoke. But God gave me the strength to save these animals. If you love a dog, you can love anyone in the world. My dog is my best friend and I wouldn’t be here without him, so I knew I had to save all the other four-legged friends.”
