A Benton-Franklin Humane Society shelter volunteer shared a video with a Labrador in the lead role on her TikTok. The black dog came to him over 500 days ago. Since then, none of the families who decided to adopt a pet from the establishment paid the slightest attention. Employees suspect that in this case they may be dealing with a certain syndrome.
The dog came to the shelter more than 500 days ago
The Labrador-type dog was brought to the Benton-Franklin Humane Society shelter in November 2021. Unfortunately, his story is not given, nor what happened to him before. Butter – because that’s the name he was given – like any animal after going through his troubles. No doubt, however, that he would be much better suited to living next to people in his home than in a shelter.
One person who developed a deeper connection with him was volunteer Julie Saraceno. She went public with her case on social media. The woman admits Butter may be nervous, but it’s something we can work on.
“Why hasn’t anyone adopted this sweet face?”
The volunteer is well aware that adult dogs generally spend much more time at the shelter than puppies. Young quadrupeds are much more readily chosen by potential caregivers who visit them. While this is understandable to some degree, there’s no doubt that older pets have a lot to offer.
In Butter’s case, he guesses that the reluctance of adopters may be caused by a syndrome that is said in the case of dark-colored animals. Unfortunately, experience tells him that, in fact, such a phenomenon does take place.

black dog syndrome
Black dog syndrome results from the observed reluctance of potential adoptive guardians towards dark-colored animals. Research by scientists from Pennsylvania has shown that the black color in quadrupeds is associated with aggression and a hostile attitude towards humans. This phenomenon may also be influenced by the opinion formed by society that dark-colored quadrupeds are associated with impure forces.
Butter is still waiting for people to like him for who he is. Volunteers and netizens who read his story hope that in the end there will be a suitable person who will give him a home and the best treatment he undoubtedly deserves.
