When Alba was adopted in 2020, the staff at Austin Pets Alive thought she was finally happy. But unfortunately, he returned two years later, in 2022. Alba suffers from “Wobbler syndrome”, a neurological disease that affects the spine and neck. Due to her physical limitations and Payang’s injuries, Alba became more defensive and fearful. Shelter staff thought it would be difficult for Alba to be adopted again.
That was of course until Joe Rotunda came along
Lorunda fell in love with Alba as soon as she saw her on Instagram. The shelter staff explained Alba’s story and her extreme fear, but Lorunda paid no attention. He decided to do his best until Alba opened up. Mr. Rotunda decided to do whatever was necessary to gain Alba’s trust.
For two months, Rotunda visited Alba daily at the shelter. He sat and talked with Alba, trying to trust her and open up.
“I looked at Alba and said, ‘Your whole family has abandoned you, but I won’t do it no matter what. Trust me.’
After working with the shelter staff and gaining Alba’s trust, Rotunda was finally able to bring her home. He built an exterior ramp, blocked off the living room to allow Alba to move around safely, and transformed the entire living space to make Alba comfortable. He and Alba are still dedicated to training Alba, and Alba has already made huge progress.
“People say it’s a hard job, but I keep telling people Alba gave me way more than I gave her,” Rotunda said.
Alba now loves exploring outside and has a great friend to play with. There’s nothing Alba can’t do as long as Rotunda is by her side.
“Alba gave me a gift every time I saw him, and he was an inspiration,” Rotunda said.
“It’s a blessing that Alba came into my life.”
