Heartbroken Dog Finds Forever Home After Being Abandoned Twice for Being Too Energetic

A dog named Kya, who looked completely defeated while sitting in a Florida animal shelter, has captured the hearts of many after being abandoned for the second time. The four-year-old was first brought to the Humane Society of Broward County in May 2024 after her original family decided to rehome her due to a move, according to Cherie Wachter, the shelter’s vice president of marketing.

Though sweet and playful, Kya waited two and a half months to be adopted. Unfortunately, her first adoption wasn’t a forever home. Wachter explained that her new family struggled with Kya during the decompression period, a critical time for dogs to adjust to their new surroundings. Despite their efforts over several weeks, Kya’s anxiety was overwhelming. She became “destructive” due to her high energy level, and the family eventually felt they couldn’t handle her.

@humanebroward Kya was returned 💔 Even though we try our best to match adopters with our available pets, it doesn’t always work out as we hope 😔 4-year-old Kya is a sweet girl with lots of playful energy and was adopted by a well meaning family, but in the end they realized they didn’t want such an energetic pup 🥺 Now, Kya is back at our shelter, but she is looking so defeated 💔 Kya is usually a very happy girl who loves to play, especially with other dogs! She also loves children and would make a great addition to an active family or to anyone looking for a friendly adventure buddy ❤️ Won’t you help Kya find her new family? ❤️ If you cannot adopt, please share her post 🙏 To meet Kya, please fill out an application at www.humanebroward.com (link is in bio) and then come on in. In a TikTok video shared by the Humane Society on September 30, Kya was seen curled up in her kennel, heartbroken. The video, which quickly went viral, showed her eyes filled with sadness, as if she had lost all hope of finding her forever family. The emotional clip resonated with many viewers, highlighting the harsh reality that millions of pets face in U.S. shelters each year.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters each year, which translates to about 17,260 each day. Sadly, approximately 920,000 of these abandoned animals are euthanized each year. Shelters across the country are working tirelessly to reduce these numbers by encouraging adoptions, promoting spay/neuter programs, and offering behavioral rehabilitation.

Luckily for Kya, her story had a happy ending. After just two weeks back at the shelter, a man named Dennis Simons traveled nearly eight hours round trip to adopt her. He saw Kya’s story on social media and knew instantly that she was meant to be a part of his family.

“She’s amazing,” Simons told Newsweek. “Her personality has just grown. We’ve had her for a month now, and she’s doing great.” Simons noticed that Kya suffered from severe separation anxiety, especially when she was confined in a crate. He believes she may have experienced crate trauma in the past, which caused her stress while confined. To accommodate her needs, they allow her to roam free while their other dog uses the crate instead.
