When a Kentucky pastor arrived for a church service, he was surprised by an unexpected sight: a small box sitting on the church steps. As he approached, he noticed writing on the side, and upon opening it, he discovered six tiny puppies huddled together inside.
A note on the box read: “Free puppies for a good home. Blue-nose pit bull cross; sire breed unknown.” Beyond that, nothing was known about their origins or why they were abandoned. Concerned for their safety, the pastor quickly contacted the Powell County Animal Shelter for help.
A race against the cold
“It was dark and it was going to be a very cold night,” Teresa Stidham of the Powell County Animal Shelter told The Dodo. “The puppies appeared healthy and freshly removed from their mother.”
Without their mother’s warmth and care, the tiny puppies were vulnerable. The shelter immediately placed them in a temporary foster home for a few days before returning them. They are now looking for a longer-term foster family capable of providing the 24-hour care newborn puppies need.
Finding a safe future
Caring for six puppies is challenging, and the shelter is doing everything it can to ensure they thrive.
“We believe they would do better with more attention than we can offer,” Stidham said.
The shelter is also searching for the person who abandoned the puppies, hoping to reunite them with their mother. In the meantime, the puppies are safe, warm, and surrounded by love, waiting for a foster family to take them in.
