Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have adopted a 7-year-old dog named Mamma Mia, according to the Beagle Freedom Project.
Mia and her eight newborn puppies were flown from Virginia to Maryland to the rescue center in California where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex met the new furry member of the family, the L.A. Times reported.
Meghan personally called Shannon Keith, the founder of the Beagle Freedom Project, and told her she wanted to help an older dog, Keith told the L.A. Times.
Prince Harry and Meghan adopt an abused beagle
Meghan seems to have a particular fondness for rescued beagles. The Duchess, who once described herself as a “proud owner of a rescue dog”, had previously adopted a beagle named Guy and brought him to England when she joined the Royal Family.
According to the rescue, Mia was among 4,000 beagles that were removed last month from a facility in Cumberland, Va., where they were bred and sold to labs that conduct animal experiments, NBC Washington reported.
Federal authorities accused the facility, operated by Envigo, of violating the Animal Welfare Act’s “minimum standards for the handling and housing of beagles.”
Many beagles have been donated to rescue organizations in the DC area, including the Humane Rescue Alliance and Homeward Trails, as well as shelters across the country.
According to a statement from Mirah Horowitz, founder and executive director of Virginia-based Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, the dogs had never played with toys, taken walks or tasted treats.
After successfully finding homes for 10 of the dogs, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue said it welcomed its second group of 10 beagles on Wednesday.
“We were amazed at the incredible support for the first 10 beagles we brought to Arlington,” Horowitz said. “We can’t wait for our next group of beagles to taste freedom.”
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue says anyone interested in adopting one of the beagles can submit an adoption questionnaire. The rescue also plans two events
