Kindness is a gift from the heart. We believe that we can all improve the world just by being a little kinder to each other. If you don’t know where kindness and compassion can be, look around you and you will see many opportunities to show it.
A refugee boy from war-torn Syria named Hüseyin el-Hasan has just regained our faith in humanity after helping an injured stray dog. As a Syrian, he and his family witnessed horrible acts and felt what it is like to be in the middle of war. During his life, Hüseyin has experienced more than anyone can bear. When Hüseyin saw a puppy hit by a car near his new home, he rushed to help immediately. He went home, took his blanket, covered the dog with it wanting to keep him warm, and then alerted the adults to call for help. Even when his own home was experiencing some heating problems, he didn’t hesitate to share his only blanket with the animal. While he waited for rescuers to arrive, Hüseyin lovingly stayed by the dog’s side.
After a while, animal care personal arrived to take the dog to a local vet. Unfortunately, it was too late and the dog did not resist. This left the little boy heartbroken, but thanks to him, the little dog was able to see some kindness in his last hours.
And, of course, his act of kindness was not forgotten. The city’s deputy mayor, Cuma Özdemir, visited Hüseyin at his home to honor the boy and his family. Özdemir said that while the boy’s gesture may not seem like much to some, it shows the better side of humanity.
Özdemir said during his visit:
Although Hüseyin’s gesture may seem unusual to some people, it represents the best of humanity.
Hüseyin was given a new blanket and some other gifts and was told that his action that day represented the best of humanity, and we all need more of that in our life and our community.
One might believe that someone like Hüseyin, who had a difficult childhood and was surrounded by meanness, would not know how to be compassionate, but this sweet boy never lost his goodwill and the ability to show love. The people of Kilis, as well as the Hüseyin family, are proud of this little hero. He is proof of how we should all live by the values that children possess.
