Sami is a beagle rescued from a farm that used the animals for experiments. Now he knows the world for the first time and is very happy.
A few weeks ago, nearly 4,000 beagles bred for experiments were rescued after the kennel closed and are being moved by the Humane Society of the United States. The dogs had been subjected to cruel research, testing and inhumane breeding practices at a breeder in Cumberland, Virginia.
Sami is one of those dogs who has never known what a caress is or walking on the grass. Like the other rescued dogs, sweet Sami was deprived all her life of what it meant to be a dog, she didn’t even know what it was to be a puppy, since from birth she had been locked in a cold cage with her brothers.
But now Sami has a new opportunity in his life, to know the love of a family and experience new and good things.
Rescued beagle is happy to touch the grass for the first time
Karen Shrader and her family have offered to host Sami, to help her open up to this new world that is unknown to her, while she is waiting for her forever at home.
Karen told The Dodo:
The first day she was very shy, but she asked for a dog bed in our family room. She would only venture a few feet from the bed.
Little by little, Sami discovered new things, she saw that the world was not so scary, that there were kind humans, and she discovered the backyard, full of grass, and for the first time in her life, she knew what freedom was.
The dog’s reaction to touching the grass for the first time was very exciting to watch. Soon after, Sami was running around like a happy dog, chasing after balls.
In the kennel he was a sad dog, and now he has everything, so there was no reason to continue to be shy; now Sami would enjoy life. She has grown into a happy and playful little dog who loves her family.
Karine added:
It warms my heart to know that he came from a place where he couldn’t be a dog and now enjoys the freedom to run, play and feel the loving touch of a human being. She received love from my family and gives us so much joy!
It was to be expected that Karen and her family would fall in love with Sami. They couldn’t give her to another family, so they decided to adopt her forever.
Karen finally said:
She won our hearts. We adopt it!
Karen hopes Sami’s story will inspire more people to consider adopting one of these beagles or help by donating to the Humane Society.
