Five adorable kittens in dire need of help were rescued and brought to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA), an animal shelter and rescue center in Arlington County, Virginia, USA. .
The animals were welcomed and provided with the care they needed. They were in poor condition; with sick eyes, a stuffy nose, and they were just skin and bones. Penny Richards, a volunteer foster parent with AWLA’s Kitten College program, looked after them.
Penny told Love Meow:
“The five of them, Weston, Walker, Margaret, Dorothea, Ansel, were named after famous black and white photographers because they were a grayscale brood.”

Some kittens were sicker than others, Maggie, the little one in gray and white, couldn’t eat due to congestion and dehydration.

Penny said:
“I had to give her fluids three times a day for the first few days and feed her with a syringe throughout the day.”

All had symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection (URI). Penny gave them all kinds of care with all the necessary medications and nebulizer treatments to improve their respiratory system.

Soon after, they started to feel better and they showed it with the scans they did in their foster home. Maggie took a little longer; she was the weakest and smallest of the litter, but she quickly caught up to the others.

When their eye and nose diseases completely improved, these cats doubled their need for food and attention.
Collectively they all searched for their adoptive mother, one by one they climbed into Penny’s lap, purring and heaping for a nap.

Penny added:
“Ansel was the first to come and snuggle up after eating, every time. He would curl up in my lap for a while and then he was ready to play.”

Penny says Maggie was the smallest of the bunch, but she had a big personality and talked the most during meals.
She said :
“Once he’s finished eating, he struts towards you, climbs into your lap and washes his paws and face while purring.”

Penny added:
“Weston has been a cuddly teddy from the start. He loves to snuggle in your lap while he purrs! He has a loud purr and activates it every time you touch him.”

According to Penny, Thea is a bit more brash and brave than her siblings.
She said :
“She loves curling up in your lap and being held, but she also loves climbing onto your shoulder and planning her way out of the room.”

Walker, for one, has some very lovable quirks. At eight weeks she was still breastfeeding, Penny added.

The 5 naughty kittens grew during the weeks they were with Penny, but they never lost the habit of lying on her lap, she only had to walk into the room and they immediately settled in on her legs and formed a mountain of fluffy kittens.

Penny said:
“Thea and Ansel bonded incredibly and always did everything together and chased each other. Weston loved rubbing his face on you, and Walker was our little weirdo who was weaned two weeks later than his siblings, and feeds still on his wet food to this day.”

After 11 weeks alongside Penny, these beautiful kittens were ready to be put up for adoption and find a great family to take them in. It should be noted that despite their size, they were still reaching for Penny’s lap.
She said :
“They didn’t quite match, so they lay on top of each other.”

A few days later, Thea and Ansel were adopted together by a family who loved them as soon as they saw them.

Weston and Maggie were also adopted together and are now home with their new family.

Walter has befriended another foster kitten named George and they are waiting for a family to welcome them into their home and give them the care and love they deserve.

Penny added:
“It has been a pleasure raising all the babies. They are going to be loved and cared for.”
