An animal shelter has captured hearts with a heartwarming video of Daisy, an 8-year-old Great Dane, shortly after she was abandoned. In May, Midwest Animal ResQ shared a heartbreaking video on Instagram showing Daisy anxiously staring out the window, panting and shaking as she waited for her owner to return. Her family had left her at the shelter, citing a lack of time to care for her.
In the caption of the video, posted under @marqkc, the shelter team wrote, “It’s been 30 minutes and she’s shaking, crying and looking out the window for her owners to come back.” Erin Morse, founder and director of Midwest Animal ResQ, told Newsweek that more and more families are surrendering senior pets, who are particularly vulnerable in shelters. โFor seniors, the transition to a shelter can be devastating, sometimes fatal,โ she said, noting the mental toll it takes on older animals.

Daisyโs family had been warned that because of her age, she would have difficulty finding another home, and staff told her there was โa real risk she would die here.โ Yet despite knowing this, her family emptied out her kennel and left. โEverything she had ever known was gone in an instant,โ the shelterโs message read. โOur hearts ache for her, but not as much as hers.โ
Great Danes, which often grow to 32 inches tall and can weigh up to 175 pounds, typically have a lifespan of eight to 10 years, according to Pets Feed website. Prospective owners of senior dogs should be prepared to provide the special care a large dog requires, both physically and emotionally. โOur animals give us unconditional love,โ the shelter wrote. โThe least we can do is support them in their twilight years.โ
Despite the heartbreak, Daisyโs story had a happy ending. Morse shared that Daisy has since been adopted and is now living out her golden years in a loving forever home. Morse stressed that pet owners should plan for their petsโ futures, especially as they age. โThere are resources across the country that help people keep their pets at home, including low-cost veterinary care and supplies,โ she explained, encouraging owners to factor their pets into estate planning.

Midwest Animal ResQโs post struck a chord with followers who praised the shelterโs compassion and Daisyโs resilience, reminding everyone that animals deserve continued care even when theyโre past their prime.
