Shelter worker rages after heartless man returns dog to shelter after 13 years.
It is an unavoidable fact that people, as well as animals, age. Sometimes this leads to our pets slowing down, and their naps being longer than normal, but it is certainly not a reason to get rid of them, which they give us so much love all their lives. The beauty is in growing old together, and those who truly love their pets know that adoption is for life.
An employee at the Los Angeles Animal Services North Central Facility in California was so upset when an older man brought his sweet and loyal dog named Canela to the shelter. They had grown old together, but he had decided it was time for them to part.
Laura Garrick was listening to and recording the man who abandoned his dog at the shelter. He told everyone that she is a “great dog.”

The man left his dog for no other reason than to be old, she can’t hear that well, and she just lies down all the time. Canela was initially adopted from the same shelter in 2004, as far as we know, she is about 15 years old.
He was giving her away not because he couldn’t continue to take care of her any longer or physically couldn’t meet her needs, but because she always spent time lying down, although she was still a wonderful companion. He had decided that enough was enough, but he still sat there, stroking her head.
He claimed that she was no longer running or doing anything. When asked why he was giving up the dog, the man said, “She doesn’t do anything else anymore, she doesn’t chase cats !“
Laura commented that the dog seemed very scared at the time. Poor Canela knew that something was happening and that it was not going to end well for her.
As she tucked her tail between her legs, trembling with fear, the man turned around and left her there with strangers. He walked out the door without thinking twice, leaving Canela, who had been a part of her life for 13 years.
After Laura shared the video, she later posted that Canela had been hosted by Leave No Paws Behind. An organization that rescues dogs, especially seniors and animals with special medical needs, and places them with adoptive families until they are adopted or until they cross the rainbow bridge.
Fortunately, Canela is blessed to experience her last days, weeks, or months with her new host family. We hope that in that time you will be very happy.
