A seriously ill pit bull has been taken into the care of Chicago Pet Treatment and Control. The severity of his skin conditions made it difficult to establish contact with people, and many were simply afraid to touch him. Fortunately, a person fell in love with him despite his illness. The pit bull, nicknamed Olivier, previously wandered aimlessly through the streets of Chicago.
A homeless dog, like many other strays, could not rely on veterinary care. He suffered from a chronic parasitic disease, because of which no passerby wanted to stop near him for fear of becoming infected. Eventually a brave man found him and took him to a nearby shelter.
The sick pit bull was disheartening with his appearance
After being transported to the facility, Olivier, about a year old, looked like seven disasters – due to intense itching, his bright red skin was covered with wounds and scratches, because this was the only way to him to get temporary relief. No one knew how long he had been on the streets or when he had been infected with the parasite.
Shelter volunteer and caregiver Stephanie Lee said she had never seen such an advanced stage of the disease before. As she made her daily rounds in the stalls, she burst into tears at the sight of an untreated animal. In the cage, he constantly licked and bit his paws, and blood flowed from his wounds.
In the cage, the dog was shaking with fear and did not understand where he was or what strangers expected of him. During the entire period of the illness, no one was interested in the health of the stray animal and only chased it out of homes, which caused the animal to become wary of humans and close in on itself- even.
Fortunately, a shelter employee contacted Tanner Smith of the Knox County Humane Society and asked him to find Olivier a foster home. After everything he had been through, he didn’t deserve to be locked in a box. He needed a family who would give him love and teach him how to make his way in the new world.
The Pit bull found his soul mate when he least expected it
Even though Olivier’s health, both physical and mental, left much to be desired, the shelter staff came together to place him in foster care. Despite the pain he felt, it was clear from the start that all he wanted was to be loved. All you had to do was let him out of the box for a moment and he would immediately try to play with the volunteers by wagging his tail.
Olivier’s new guardians were Stephanie Lee and her husband, Johnny, who set up a room for their ward in their home and brought him into their home on April 4. After a complete veterinary exam, Oliver was diagnosed with demodicosis and secondary skin infections.
After starting the treatment, regularly bathing in a special shampoo and rubbing the skin with lotion and coconut oil, I began to notice the effects. The inflammation decreased and the dog’s well-being visibly improved.
– He stopped rubbing everywhere to get relief. It just opened. He wanted love. He wanted to have fun. He wanted to go for walks. It was great to see him being a normal, happy dog, Lee recalled in an interview with “The Dodo.”
After 6 weeks, the condition was gone and the irritated skin returned to normal. From then on, Olivier lies on his back without any trace of fear and proudly shows off his stomach, asking for affection.
Although Oliver’s past remains unclear, caregivers suspect the pit bull was abandoned when his health began to decline. The previous owners apparently didn’t bother going to the vet and simply got rid of the problem by throwing the animal out on the street.
It is difficult to imagine how much Olivier must have suffered on the street, but temporary guardians cannot wait for the moment when the traumatic past will be forgotten once and for all and the pit bull will definitely go to a new home. Fingers crossed that everything goes well from now on!
