British scientists claim that the current population of wild cats is contaminated by a mixture of feral domestic cats and that the true wild cats of England and Wales disappeared at the end of the 19th century. Although the future of the species of this wild cat seemed already decided, they managed to save it. For many years, Scottish scientists have used various methods to restore wild cat populations in the British Isles, from captive breeding to reintroduction into the wild. To save the animals from extinction, Scottish researchers bred wild cats in captivity, but also conducted detailed genetic research. The aim was to eliminate hybrids resulting from the crossing of wild cats and domestic cats. Thanks to their efforts, it was possible to obtain healthy and genetically pure individuals, ready to be released into the wild. A total of 19 cats were living in British forests, and 16 of them are under constant monitoring by scientists using implanted transmitters and camera recordings.
