An unusual incident happened at the nature reserve, involving both local farmers and wildlife rangers. When the photographer noticed a herd of cows peering into a mud puddle, he didn’t expect to become the hero of an unusual rescue operation. What he discovered surprised everyone and required the immediate intervention of specialists working at a wildlife protection organization.
A herd of cows caught the photographer’s attention
One day, on a beautiful summer morning, Ian Ellis from Boston, a nature lover and photographer, decided to spend some time at the RSPB Frampton Marshes reserve in Great Britain. As usual, armed with binoculars, he was scouring the surroundings in search of rare birds, when suddenly something completely different caught his eye.
The photographer noticed that a herd of about thirty cows was behaving extremely strangely. Instead of peacefully grazing in the meadow, the animals gathered around a mud puddle, roaring and lowering their heads to the ground. At first, the observant photographer thought that a dog was stuck in the mud, but the reality turned out to be more surprising.
A wild animal got stuck in the mud. It was all alone
As he got closer, he saw a small seal pup stuck in the stream, completely confused and helpless. The mother was nowhere to be seen. The photographer immediately realized that the creature needed help. Without hesitation, he contacted the rangers of the RSPB reserve and Skegness Natureland, a wildlife rescue organization.
Duncan Yeadon, one of the organisationโs directors, and RSPB chief of staff Toby Collett gave the man detailed instructions on how to safely move the seal. The animal had to be immediately removed from the water and warmed up. Natureland staff arrived on site as quickly as possible to care for the escaped pup.
As soon as we brought the seal back to Natureland, she was immediately taken to the seal hospital where treatment began. The animalโs main problem was her youth: she was only 5 days old. She was orphaned and did not eat for some time, leading to significant weight loss and dehydration โ the organisationโs director Richard Yeadon described the situation on social media.
The seal pup needed help
The hospital staff immediately tried to save the little patient. The seal was initially given fluids through a special stomach tube to equalize the fluid level in the body as quickly as possible. She was then put on a special diet and given only high-fat herring to help her gain weight. The animal was also treated with antibiotics because, due to hypothermia, she developed life-threatening breathing problems.
The seal pup was named Celebration to celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary. Thanks to the photographer’s intervention, the animal was given the chance to reach adulthood and live in the wild. After a while, when she grew older, stronger, and was able to feed in the water, rescuers released her to a safe place in her natural environment.
