In the summer of 2023, a tan and white pit bull named Patience thought her life was about to change forever. After spending months in a New Jersey animal shelter, she was adopted and finally had a family of her own.
But Patience’s happy ending was short-lived. In November 2024, more than a year after she was adopted, she was found wandering the streets of New Jersey, injured and alone. When good Samaritans brought her back to the shelter, it was clear she had suffered significant emotional and physical trauma.
Patience, once a hopeful and loving dog, was a shell of her former self. She retreated to the corner of her kennel, facing the wall, her head down, refusing to interact with anyone. Her heartbreaking behavior left shelter staff desperate to find her the help she so desperately needed.

When a photo of Patience in her kennel was shared online, she caught the attention of Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Northeast (SNARR Northeast), a foster-based shelter that specializes in helping animals with special needs.
“Sometimes you just know a dog has to be a part of your rescue,” Maddie Weiser of SNARR Northeast told The Dodo. “When one of our team members saw Patience’s photo, she immediately knew we had to save her.”
The SNARR Northeast team sprang into action, mobilizing their network to find Patience a foster home. Within days, they found the perfect family, and on December 22, 2024, Patience’s journey to recovery truly began.

The moment Patience left the shelter was nothing short of magical.
“She was so happy!” said Weiser. “She transformed into a new dog almost instantly. She loves human affection, cuddles, and being in a warm, safe home.”

Thanks to SNARR Northeast, Patience spent the holidays surrounded by love, without being confined to the cold walls of a kennel.

Since leaving the shelter, Patience has blossomed in her foster home. Her once reserved demeanor has given way to a playful and quirky personality. She has even developed a unique way of showing affection by gently nudging people’s arms with her mouth as if to say hello.
While her foster family provides her with unconditional love, SNARR Northeast is working to address her medical needs. Patience’s symptoms suggest she may have suffered a traumatic accident.
“She has a spinal injury, likely from a car crash, and she is completely blind, with limited vision directly in front of her,” Weiser said. “She will soon see a neurologist for further evaluation.”

Despite her challenges, Patience’s resilience shines through. She has embraced her new life with enthusiasm and gratitude, proving that even the most broken spirits can heal with love and care.
“She is the sweetest, happiest, most grateful dog,” Weiser said.
SNARR Northeast is awaiting a full diagnosis before placing Patience up for adoption. In the meantime, she is thriving in her foster home, surrounded by warmth and compassion.
