Sometimes love is the cure. This seems to be the “moral” of the story of the dog Annie, who, after 19 years, was taken to a kennel by her former owners. When he arrived, veterinarians gave him only one month to live, also due to his age and precarious state of health. But her life changed dramatically after two friends decided to adopt her, so that she wouldn’t have to live out her final days alone. Now for 4 months, the dog has been at home cared for and loved like never before, she celebrated her birthday and spends her time surrounded by the love of both owners.
Making him live out his last days in the kennel was cruel
Annie is a black Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog. The decision to adopt him was made by Lauren Siler, who had lost her dog a month earlier: “I thought that if Bear (her dog’s name) had lived to be 19, I would have been the person the luckiest in the world”. So, she talked about it with her roommate, Lisa Flores and together, they decided to take the big step by contacting the shelter that had housed her in Texas. In the establishment, they immediately notified them of Annie’s critical condition, but the two girls are convinced.
The wish list to achieve
“Annie is a gentle and calm soul; she is wise even if sometimes we see the puppy in her” say the two friends. The two new owners made a list of wishes to fulfill before Annie leaves them: in June they celebrated Christmas, in July a birthday party and enjoyed a “pawdicure” day at the spa, a picnic and a professional photo session. “Every time we take the camera out, she lights up and smiles at us to let us know we’re doing the right thing and she’s happy,” Siler said.
Both girls also took a DNA test for Annie, which revealed that she was 48% Labrador Retriever, 25% American Pit Bull Terrier, 12% Boxer, 7% Chow Chow and 4% American Staffordshire Terrier.
Tippy’s arrival
Siler and Flores also took in another senior dog named Tippy: its owner died, while the other was moved to a senior care facility. “We decided to welcome him, and to make him a wish list too” say Lauren and Lisa. On Tippy and Annie’s list, there are still many wishes to realize and check off: the hope is to have time to be able to realize them all.
And as with all 4-legged friends who are starting to “grow up”, it is perhaps the idea that time is running out that makes us love them even more.
