Sassafras and Huey struck up the sweetest of friendships over the fence, when the little doe visited the yard in search of seeds.
A small but brave doe was first seen by Holly Faulconer one day as she managed to steal the seed she had left for the birds in the feeders across her yard fence.
Holly was too charmed by the little girl’s ingenuity, and she kept coming back, but not for the reasons Holly thought.
Sassafras, as Holly called the wild deer, was now returning for reasons other than food entirely. She just wanted to see and “chat” over the fence with her new best friend, Huey the dog.
Wild deer form the sweetest friendship with a dog
Holly rescued Huey 9 years ago, and since then the guardian dog hasn’t left her, so Holly was surprised to see Huey’s interest in befriending the doe, instead of seeing this wild creature as a threat, something he would have done a long time ago.
Holly told The Dodo:
Huey was a little confused at first and definitely suspicious. I just talked to them both and made sure they both felt safe. Gradually they started talking about the fence!
Sassafras continued to return regularly to chat with his new best friend, sometimes bringing his two children to visit.

It’s absolutely adorable. I love seeing them.
Sassafras and Huey may be different species, but the only thing that matters to them is that adorable friendship they found on the other side of the fence. There is no doubt that friendship has no limits.
