Danielle was unprepared for what awaited her at a shelter she visited in Israel, she didn’t know which dog to save and bought the whole shelter. Now the animals are in a sanctuary in Canada waiting to be adopted.
Danielle Eden, co-founder of Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, has visited countless animal shelters around the world, often bringing a pair of dogs back to the 50-acre property in King, Ontario, Canada under the most difficult of circumstances. But she was unprepared for what awaited her at a shelter she visited in Israel, where all the dogs were in terrible condition.
Clare Forndran, Media Director for Dog Tales, said:
“This is the worst refuge I have ever seen.”
Over 250 dogs were crammed into a space made for only 70. Rats abounded, dead and alive.
She didn’t know which dog to save and bought the shelter

Many dogs had spent years there, every piece of bread thrown into a kennel an invitation to fight.
Claire said:
“The dogs were literally fighting over a piece of bread. There were more rats than dogs.”

Once she surveyed the heartbreaking scene, Danielle couldn’t choose which dogs would have a chance at a new life in Canada. They all experienced the same misery. So, Danielle decided to buy the whole shelter.

Since then, Dog Tales has cared for all 250 dogs, and in the past few months they’ve managed to move 90 of them to Israel itself, 25 have made the trip to the sanctuary in Ontario, and 150 are still there.

But the shelter is being transformed thanks to a team in Israel responsible for making the place habitable, while veterinarians provide medical care for the animals.

The goal is to get them all to Canada, and that mission is already off to a good start. Of the first 25 dogs to arrive, more than half have been adopted and are learning to trust again.
