While doing a search on Petfinder to take care of a dog during the holidays, Lauren Smith Greeno discovered the pictures of a dog with the saddest eyes, and in that moment, she knew that she was the one for her. Lauren wanted to help her get comfortable before finding a forever home.

Her family, who already had 3 dogs, hoped that it would help her feel safe and happy and that she would have a much calmer life while it was time to find a permanent home. The dog named Ginnie was separated from her previous family because they did not take care of her properly.

Ginnie and her littermates kept out on short leashes and never knew what it was like to lie on a warm bed and have their own toys.

Lauren told The Dodo:

“My heart broke when I saw her eyes. They looked so distraught, but hopeful. I felt instantly connected to her. [I] wanted to hug her.”

Ginnie and her siblings were taken to a shelter before being taken in by Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue. Ginnie’s siblings were adopted almost immediately, but after six months, Ginnie still hadn’t found her forever home.

The rescue center thought it was because of her dark fur, which made it difficult to photograph her.

Lauren says:

“Nobody wanted her. After rescuing Ginnie and falling in love with her, it’s hard to understand what exactly it is that drives potential adopters away from her. She is a gentle and loving girl who loves to hug and she is friends with everyone she meets.”

After seeing her photos and learning about the dog’s story, Lauren arranged to fetch Ginnie from the rescue center and take her to her home. Her initial plan was to take her in, but as soon as she met Ginnie, Lauren had the feeling that she couldn’t let her go, she was already home.

Lauren remembers:

“When we picked her up from the rescue center, we had her in the back of the car so she would have room to decompress. We barely left the pickup location before she climbed onto my lap and started smothering me with kisses. I cried. She was so trusting and so open to being loved.”

As soon as Ginnie was home, her adoptive family introduced her to her three other dogs and showed him her place. Although she was a bit scared and somewhat withdrawn, she also seemed to feel relieved, as if she understood that she was finally safe.

The dog was easily attached to her new family, and in a few hours Ginnie had become a definite member of this household.

Lauren added:

“The second day, I took her to my room and put her on the bed (she had never been in a bed). I lay down on the bed and invited her to lie down next to me. Without hesitation, she approached and collapsed.”

The sweet dog seemed relieved to feel the bed of her new mother. She was very astonished and relieved; she opened her eyes very surprised by everything new that she was experiencing. At that moment Lauren says that she realized that Ginnie was already home.

She is now an official member of the family, who has quickly adapted to her new life and loves to play with her three dog brothers. She loves her new family very much and they can no longer imagine her life without her.

Ginnie’s mother finally said:

“She fills our hearts with great joy. Whenever our eyes meet hers, her tail immediately begins to wag. She is just the embodiment of pure love and kindness, and we are so grateful that we came across her photo.”
