“She’s just a baby in need of love.”
Squirrel is a sweet and affectionate pup who craves hugs and cuddles more than anything. Sadly, life at a shelter means she doesn’t get the endless snuggles she truly deserves.
Things weren’t always this way for Squirrel. She once had a family, but they abandoned her right before Hurricane Helene was set to hit Florida. Mercy Full Project, a Tampa-based rescue organization, discovered her wandering alone and took her in just before the storm made landfall.

When Squirrel first arrived at the shelter, she was visibly distressed.
“She’s just a young pup, and she was so frightened,” the shelter staff said.
The only thing that calms Squirrel is being held close. Every time a staff member walks by her kennel, she leaps up, desperate for a hug. She even climbs several feet up the kennel bars, locking eyes with anyone nearby, silently pleading for affection.
A video on Mercy Full Project’s TikTok captures one of these heartwarming moments. In it, a shelter worker gives in to Squirrel’s desperate call for attention. As soon as the staff member enters her kennel, Squirrel bounces with excitement, but the moment she’s picked up, she completely relaxes.

“She’s just a baby who wants to be loved,” one TikTok commenter noted.
While the staff at Mercy Full Project love showering Squirrel with the affection she craves, what she truly needs is a loving family to give her all the attention she longs for — a permanent home.

“Adopt Squirrel if you’re looking for a clingy cuddle buddy,” the shelter suggested on TikTok.
Thankfully, Squirrel’s story has touched many hearts, and the shelter has already received several adoption applications. It won’t be long before she finds a forever family and will never have to climb kennel bars for a hug again.
