Everyone probably knows the movie “The Godfather” and the scene in which Don Vito Corleone shows affection towards a little kitten. Surprisingly, it was created by chance. The director of the cult film revealed that the script made no mention of animals. What made this ordinary little guy a movie star? Marlon Brando’s magnetism worked.
During the filming of “The Godfather”, everything did not go as planned. It’s because of the cat
“The Godfather” is a timeless hit that probably needs no introduction. This American drama, telling the story of the Corleon mafia family, led by Don Vito Corleone, is still popular, even though more than 50 years have passed since the premiere of the first of three parts.
The film, based on the novel by Maria Puzo, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. It turns out, however, that even in works created by perfectionists, there’s plenty of room for a little spontaneity. The ‘Godfather’ director admitted that a kitten hungry for affection had a huge influence on the course of one of the most important scenes.
The cat in “The Godfather” By pure chance, the animal shares the screen with Marlon Brando
Just before filming the scene in which Don Vito Corleone had a serious conversation with his office employee, a little cat infiltrated the set. The animal demanded the attention of everyone it could reach. We did not hesitate to attack the actor who, in a few seconds, would play the role of the leader of a dangerous gang. The “Godfather” director revealed that that’s when an idea came to him:
“It was improvised, there was no mention of cats in the script. The fluffy “actor” happened to be on the set and stayed there for a while until the actor who played Don Corleone, Marlon Brando, noticed him, put the cat on his knees and started playing with him and caressing him.”
The cat warmed up the image of the mafia boss. The scene in which he starred went down in history
Coppola decided that the animal perfectly matched the atmosphere of the filmed scene, and by showing that even a ruthless gangster can have a soft spot for animals, he will warm up the image of the Sicilian mafioso a little. So, by pure chance, a backyard beet that appeared out of nowhere on the set became an important member of the Corleone family.
It should be added that during filming, the animal purred so loudly that it disrupted the words spoken by the actor. For this reason, Brando’s famous monologue had to be re-recorded. However, everything indicates that it was a game worth the effort. It is possible that it is thanks to the kitten that this scene has remained engraved in the memory of fans of the “Godfather”.
