In the wake of intense flash floods in Spain, a dramatic rescue in Utiel, Valencia province, has captured the world’s attention. A woman trapped in her wooden house with waist-high waters was rescued by rescuers who arrived by helicopter. Throughout the ordeal, she clung to her beloved pets, with a small dog and a cat carrier floating alongside her.
The rescue video, shared by Javier Ballesteros on social media, shows members of the Consorci Provincial de Bombers de València descending to join her. In the breathtaking footage, the woman, holding her dog close and a makeshift floating box with her cats, reaches out to the rescuer in gratitude. A second rope is soon lowered, securing both the woman and her pets for airlift. As they prepare to go back up, she bravely wades deeper into the floodwaters, giving the helicopter enough space to pull her, her dog, and her cats to safety.
Ballesteros, who documented the event, shared with relief the news that all the animals were rescued safely. “We managed to get the helicopter to come and rescue Utiel, who was stuck with her cats and dog,” he wrote. Commenters flooded his post with messages of support, admiration, and concern for the animals. “I hope they are okay, my heart is in my mouth,” wrote one user, while another commented, “I need to know if all the animals are okay!”

The incredible rescue was a small but vital triumph in the midst of a larger tragedy. The floods, caused by unprecedented rainfall – the equivalent of a year’s worth of rain in eight hours in Chiva, Valencia – have left Spain in mourning, with the death toll rising to at least 62. The Spanish meteorological service has issued a red alert for the Valencia region, as well as warnings for parts of Andalusia as more storms threaten the already devastated area.
